Nova Southeastern University Unveils Kent Ullberg Shark Sculpture

Underground Shark

“Underground Shark” commissioned in support of Palm Beach Garden’s Art in Public Places Program

Loveland, CO and Palm Beach Gardens, FL — Internationally known wildlife sculptor Kent Ullberg’s latest work was dedicated at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) on Tuesday, May 8, 2012. The one-of-a-kind eight-foot-long, four-and-a-half-foot-tall mako shark – the university’s mascot – rises out of the pavers of the plaza at the entrance of NSU’s Palm Beach Student Educational Center (SEC). The shark’s tail also breaks the surface, rising three feet above the piazza. The piece was commissioned by NSU in support of Palm Beach Garden’s Art in Public Places Program.

The unveiling took place at the Palm Beach SEC’s state-of-the art 75,000-square-foot facility. The Center also hosted an Open House immediately following the unveiling, where prospective students met faculty and staff and toured the facility.

“Wildlife, and particularly marine life, is my passion,” notes Ullberg. “Florida is a special place for me, and I was honored to have the opportunity to do another mako shark for Nova, and to do another distinctive piece for display in south Florida.”

This is the second shark sculpture by Ullberg installed on an NSU campus. During ceremonies in early 2009, NSU unveiled a 17-foot-tall bronze mako shark at its Don Taft University Center entrance on the school’s main campus. This piece, commissioned by NSU’s PAN-Student Government Association, depicts the leaping shark rising above a wave in a 10-foot-high fountain. The 3,000-pound piece features 76 polished stainless steel teeth.

“We believe art enriches one’s character and contributes to the quality of life of the community,” said NSU’s Palm Beach Student Educational Director George Dungee. “Not only is it important to a student’s development, but it is also important to a community’s development. We are proud to support Palm Beach Gardens and its Art in Public Places initiative with this beautiful shark sculpture created by renowned artist Kent Ullberg.”

In addition to the two mako sharks he’s done for NSU, Ullberg is best known in south Florida for his creation of Sailfish in Three Stages of Ascending. Located at the entrance of the Broward County Convention Center, this work shows three sailfish ascending from water.

Nova Southeastern University, in Davie, Florida, is a dynamic fully accredited Florida university dedicated to providing high-quality educational programs of distinction from preschool through the professional and doctoral levels. NSU has more than 28,000 students and is the eighth largest not-for-profit independent institution nationally. The University awards associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and first-professional degrees in a wide range of fields, including business, counseling, computer and information sciences, education, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, dentistry, various health professions, law, marine sciences, early childhood, psychology and other social sciences. Classified as a research university with “high research activity” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, NSU was also awarded Carnegie’s Community Engagement Classification in 2010 for the University’s significant commitment to and demonstration of community engagement. Faustson Adds Quick-Turn Prototype Cell, New Zeiss CMM

Faustson Adds Quick-Turn Prototype Cell, New Zeiss CMM

New capabilities respond to industry trends and customer demands

Faustson Tool (www.faustson.com), a worldwide leader in five-axis manufacturing technology, has expanded its capabilities, adding quick-turn prototyping capabilities to its existing line-up of high-precision machining services, as well as a new Zeiss Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). Faustson added these new capabilities in response to industry trends and customer requests that have produced growing demand for these types of services.

“We work closely with many of our clients, and know their processes and specifications very well,” said Faustson’s Director of Operations Heidi Hostetter. “They know our parts are ‘dock to stock,’ and that we deliver exceptional quality, so they can trust that our rapid prototype work will meet the same high standards.

Hostetter notes that Faustson was already providing rapid prototyping services to several customers as part of its standard mix of services, and that adding a dedicated department helps their team be more responsive to a growing volume of projects in this arena. “Ball Aerospace was one of the first to approach us to discuss their need for true five-axis capabilities in a quick-turn environment, and we were happy to respond.”

This new service at Faustson Tool allows its customers to augment the capabilities of their in-house development team and improve their competitive position in their respective industries. The experts at Faustson review prototype designs and make suggestions that may make manufacturing faster, easier, and reduce costs, helping to keep new product lines moving forward and reducing time to market.

New CMM Supports Rapid Prototyping

The company’s new Zeiss Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) provides an upgrade in speed and size for the Faustson quality inspection team.

“This new instrument gives our quality inspectors the ability to work faster and program final part inspections with fewer setups than ever before,” said Faustson’s Director of Operations Heidi Hostetter. “It helps us keep up with a growing volume of work, including rapid prototyping, which has customers relying on us to meet or exceed specifications on every part.”

The Zeiss CONTURA G2 Bridge CMM features VAST scanning for form inspections at maximum speed with high-quality results. Its fully articulating probe head is a great match for the complex five-axis mill work Faustson specializes in. Parts can be inspected in a manner similar to the way they are machined, and complex profiles can be easily verified. Ceramic guideways in X and Z, along with air bearings on all axes, provide rigidity and high stability at high travel speeds.

The new Zeiss CMM offers a measuring range, in inches, of 39.4, 63.0, and 23.6 for the X, Y, and Z axes, respectively. This enormous footprint compliments Faustson’s large five-axis mills. It uses CALYPSO metrology software, and both inspectors at Faustson have recently completed Calypso Advanced Training from Carl Zeiss metrology. The software allows inspectors to program from a CAD model before a physical part is even available, adding to the company’s quick-turn abilities.

Faustson’s role as a trusted partner allows many of its clients to streamline the inspection process and other administrative routines that can slow the creation and delivery of products. The company’s expanded prototyping services are ideal for clients seeking quick-turn access to high-mix, low-volume, high-precision mechanical parts.

Faustson is a woman-owned and -operated business that serves customers across the nation and internationally. The company holds a number of government contracts, and manufactured the optical substrate for the Kepler space telescope launched in 2009 to find earth-like planets scattered across the galaxy. Faustson is currently performing work related to the United States’ F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter development effort, as well as commercial and military missile-deflection efforts now underway. Plans are underway to provide more services to Europe starting in 2012.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations).

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference inCalifornia26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. Loveland Sculptor Rosetta’s Latest Work Unveiled at Salt Lake’s City Creek Center

Artist’s largest piece graces new downtown mixed-use redevelopment project

Loveland, Colorado– Loveland’s Rosetta, an internationally-known sculptor of animals, is pleased to announce the unveiling of her latest and largest work to date, “Stream of Life,” as part of the grand opening celebration for Salt Lake City’s new City Creek Center, one of the nation’s largest mixed-use downtown redevelopment projects. The piece was commissioned through the efforts of Missouri’s Public Art & Practice and the project was awarded to Rosetta in October of 2009 after a nationwide request for proposals.

According to City Creek Reserve Director of Architecture Bill Williams, “The intent was to capture the unique ecological makeup of the Salt Lake Valley in multiple media. In particular, we wanted a large sculpture that represented the fauna of the valley before the pioneers arrived in 1847. After extensive evaluation, we concluded that Rosetta’s work fit our aesthetic the best – particularly her ability to capture the character and personality of animals in a modern technique that is not so abstract that the animal is lost.”

For two years, Rosetta shepherded the creation of “Stream of Life” from conception to sculpting and casting, culminating in the installation of the work in February. The 14-foot-long bronze, created exclusively for City Creek Center, is surrounded by a beautifully landscaped creek that runs through the entire three-city-block project. The piece incorporates ten animals in a creek-side habitat, arranged in a montage-style composition rather than a realistic tableau.

“City Creek Center is an impressive and beautiful project right across from Temple Square,” notes Rosetta.  “I love the setting for the sculpture and the opportunity to provide residents and visitors in this urban area the fun of mingling with wildlife as a non-threatening and visually stimulating experience.”

All of the included species are residents of riparian habitat, and some are iconic Utah natives, such as the state mammal, elk; the state bird, seagull; and the state fish, cutthroat trout. Rosetta’s interest in filling a space below the crowning bald eagle provided the opportunity to include the state emblem, the beehive. Three river otters and a black bear are there for the fun of it and for the added design opportunity incorporating them provided. The elements of the waterfall and the flowing creek tie all of the animals together and allow the design of the sculpture to flow smoothly throughout.

Key Contributions from Loveland’s Art Community

Bringing “Stream of Life” to fruition was a shared effort between Rosetta and many skilled artisans who contribute to Loveland’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading art bronze producing communities. Independent contractors who were part of the project include Gary DuChateau, enlargement; Dan Ochs, mold making and wax pouring; Kathy Page, wax chasing; Dragon Castings, which cast the bronze; Eric Mesplé who tackled the formidable task of welding and chasing the 58 pieces of the puzzle into a beautiful finish; Patrick Kipper, who created the gorgeous patina; Bryan Wright, transport and installation; and Rosetta’s photographer, driver and all-around support system, husband Mel Schockner.

About City Creek Center

Owned by the LDS Church and run by Taubman Centers Inc. (which also runs the Cherry Creek Mall in Denver), City Creek Center is a mixed-use retail, residential and office complex. It is the first enclosed shopping center to open in the U.S. in six years, reflecting the vibrant Salt Lake economy and transforming the downtown area. Located across the street from Temple Square, City Creek Center’s amenities include luxury condos and apartments, two levels of retail with 100 stores, restaurants, an outdoor fireplace and heated sidewalks, a retractable skylight roof, waterfalls and lively fountains, as well as several sculptures, of which “Stream of Life” is the most prominent. More than 50,000 people attended the City Creek Center Grand Opening on March 22.

About Rosetta

Known internationally for her stylized sculptures of animals and exhibited in a multitude of galleries, museums and art organizations across the country, Rosetta has completed large commissions for corporations, universities, cities and museums as well as individual collections, with “Stream of Life” in City Creek being her largest in both size and scope.
