Test case integrates R&D, OEMs, contractors and subs to efficiently employ AM processes, expand markets and increase resiliency
Golden, CO –ADAPT, the Alliance for the Development of Additive Processing Technologies, a research consortium focused on developing technologies to accelerate the certification and qualification of 3D printed metal parts, in cooperation with the University of Utah, has received funding from the U.S. Department of Defense for the first phase of the Mountain West Advanced Manufacturer’s Network (MWAMN). From the approximately $2.7 million in funding, roughly $1.5 million will go to Colorado School of Mines and ADAPT.
“This program creates a new manufacturing platform to advance economic and workforce resilience in response to changes in defense spending,” said ADAPT Technical Director Aaron Stebner. “Enabling manufacturers to efficiently deploy additive manufacturing processes helps diversify their product offerings, expand into non-defense markets, and provide resilient employment and value to their communities and the economy independent of defense spending.”
The MWAMN leverages ADAPT’s existing data infrastructure built with funding from a State of Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade Advanced Industries Accelerator grant and funds from founding member companies. This data infrastructure will help inform product and material change-overs; create new innovations and diversification; accelerate product development; and reduce reliance on the defense industry while improving the ability respond to new Department of Defense requirements.
Other network members include Citrine Informatics; Carnegie Mellon’s NextManufacturing Center; and the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership organizations from Colorado and Utah, Manufacturer’s Edge and the MEP Center at The University of Utah.
“Additive manufacturing holds the promise of enabling manufacturers to quickly adapt to changing market needs compared to traditional manufacturing methods,” noted Heidi Hostetter, ADAPT industry board chair. “Today, building new parts or switching materials with this technology takes too long. MWAMN is focused on radically shortening that time, lowering costs, and reducing the negative economic impact on companies and communities when defense programs and spending changes.”
Together, members will network past, present, and future defense-supported metals manufacturers directly with advanced manufacturing research and development centers via a centralized, artificially intelligent database. This platform will enable defense manufacturing contractors to efficiently use AM processes to shorten product development cycles, expand product mix, enter new non-defense markets, increasing economic diversification of their businesses along with economic and workforce resilience.

BMA brings large additive manufacturing capabilities for aluminum parts
Golden, CO –ADAPT, the Alliance for the Development of Additive Processing Technologies, a research consortium focused on developing technologies to accelerate the certification and qualification of 3D printed metal parts, welcomes their most recent member, Big Metal Additive, a new company that specializes in larger build metal additive manufacturing.
“I have been pioneering large additive manufacturing capabilities for aerospace and spacecraft applications for almost two decades and now I am excited to launch Big Metal Additive (BMA) to satisfy complex designs that meet the needs of a broad range of customers,” said BMA Founder Slade Gardner. “Colorado is the right place to be for this company launch especially with the powerful technology support that comes with ADAPT expertise.”
BMA uses a proven wire-fed, arc-based additive manufacturing method to create large, complex design structures from aluminum. The first BMA machine is a 4ft x 4ft custom-built machine from a best-in-class manufacturer of custom-made 5-axis and 3-axis CNC routers based in Colorado Springs, CO. BMA has configured this first machine for large-scale industrial additive manufacturing that can be done in an open shop environment.

Loveland, CO – The NoCo Hemp Expo, the largest hemp-centric event in the U.S., has announced details of its opening and closing concert events, as well as programming highlights from the Bluebird Botanicals Artists & Activists Tent. Thursday night’s kickoff concert is at the Aggie Theater in Fort Collins. Saturday night’s Honor the Earth after-Expo concert is at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins. Section 7606 of the 2014 Farm Bill, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama, differentiates industrial hemp from marijuana at the federal level, and legalizes the growth and production in states that have passed legislation and setup the regulatory framework through the department of agriculture. It defines industrial hemp as follows:
“The term ‘industrial hemp’ means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and ANY PART OF SUCH PLANT, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.”
The 2014 Farm Bill language reaffirms and expands the 2004 Ninth Circuit Court’s ruling on imported industrial hemp in HIA vs. DEA that protects naturally occurring cannabinoids, including delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.
This week, Congressman Jared Polis of Colorado and Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky reintroduced the Industrial Hemp Farming Act which would completely remove Industrial Hemp from the Controlled Substances Act. “The federal ban on hemp has been a waste of taxpayer dollars that ignores science, suppresses innovation, and subverts the will of states that have chosen to incorporate this versatile crop into their economies,” said Representative Polis.
The NoCo Hemp Expo enters its fourth year at The Ranch Events Complex on March 31 and April 1, 2017, in Loveland, Colorado. The expo has grown from just over 300 attendees in 2014 to more than 3,000 in 2016. Attendance is expected to exceed 4,000 in 2017. These numbers reflect growth nationally in market interest and production of industrial hemp. Roughly 200 acres planted in various states in 2014 grew to more than 10,000 acres planted in 2016, with an additional 2 million+ square feet of indoor greenhouse space growing high cannabinoid, non-psychoactive hemp targeted for the health and wellness sectors of industry. More than 30 states have passed hemp legislation that effectively nullifies the outdated and incorrect inclusion of industrial hemp within the Controlled Substances Act.

Certification of 3D printed prototype helps win contract extension
Golden, CO – ADAPT, the Alliance for the Development of Additive Processing Technologies, a research consortium focused on developing technologies to accelerate the certification and qualification of 3D printed metal parts, has helped member company Reaction Systems win a two-year, $750K SBIR contract extension.
“This early success shows the value of collaboration between ADAPT members,” said ADAPT Technical Director Aaron Stebner.
With a Phase II SBIR project with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to develop a hypersonic jet engine part and a need for specialized additive manufacturing expertise, Reaction Systems turned to founding member company Faustson and ADAPT to create a prototype and keep moving the project forward.
David Wickham, Reaction Systems’ president and senior project manager, said, “The part has an intricate interior channel that can only be made this way. As it moves forward, our production volume will grow, and we’ll need ADAPT’s expertise to show the part can withstand rigorous conditions. They’ve already demonstrated they can provide useful data to help us do that, and membership helps us expand our capabilities and expertise in using catalysts on complex surfaces.”
Small manufacturers can’t justify the expense required to adopt emerging additive metal technology without a resource like ADAPT. Real-time monitoring costs hundreds of thousands of dollars they simply don’t have. ADAPT membership and access to shared resources, world-class expertise and peer organizations with complementary needs and services make it affordable for Faustson, Reaction Systems, and other small manufacturers to successfully invest in this emerging technology.
“We had no experience with additive manufacturing, and started looking around to find the expertise and resources we needed,” noted Reaction Systems COO Jeffrey Engel. “A contact at Mines connected us with founding member Faustson and ADAPT. That enabled us to quickly manufacture the part with the internal geometry it requires, something we could not have done with traditional machining techniques.”
Heidi Hostetter, ADAPT Industry Board Chair and VP of Faustson, said, “AFRL was right when they asked it to be made additively. A complex part, accelerated schedule, and low volume was tailor-made for 3D metal printing.”
Faustson worked with Reaction Systems to make the part in a few days on its Concept Laser machine. The R&D team at Mines then used the ADAPT lab equipment to characterize the part to show it met design specifications. The result was a two-year extension of the Reaction Systems contract, worth $750,000, to continue work on the part.

Company is the first manufacturer of 3D metal printers to join consortium
Golden, CO – ADAPT, the Alliance for the Development of Additive Processing Technologies, a research consortium focused on developing technologies to accelerate the certification and qualification of 3D printed metal parts, welcomes new member Concept Laser, a pioneer in 3D metal printing with U.S. headquarters in Grapevine, Texas.
