About Northern Colorado Manufacturing Partnership

The NoCo Manufacturing Partnership was formed in 2013 as a result of Governor Hickenlooper’s state Economic Development plan called the Colorado Blue Print. The Blue Print identified 11 key sectors of the economy in Colorado by region. Northern Colorado’s two main sectors identified were Health and Wellness and Advanced Manufacturing. Regions within the state were encouraged to form sector partnerships to provide more localized grassroots support to augment state efforts in each sector.

These would be industry specific, led by business, in partnership with economic development, education and workforce development. A collaboration arose as part of the Blue Print process involving people from each of these affiliations and the NoCo Manufacturing Partnership was born. It continues to be an all-volunteer, business-led, FREE membership organization designed to support Northern Colorado manufacturers. It is served by a Board of Directors, representing each affiliation from private business to local government, as well as two active committees: Networking and Manufacturing Talent/Rocks! Three Fort Collins/Loveland Companies are Finalists in 3rd Annual Colorado Manufacturing Awards

NoCo Partnership Collaborates with Colorado Manufacturing Awards to Select Finalists in the Consumer & Lifestyle Category

March 29, 2018 – NOCOMDenver, Colorado – Four Northern Colorado companies have been named finalists in the third-annual Colorado Manufacturing Awards (CMA), representatives from the NoCo Manufacturing Partnership announced. They include Tolmar in the Outstanding Bioscience Manufacturer category; Manes Machine in the Outstanding Contract Manufacturer category; and Lightning Systems in the Outstanding Energy/Environment Manufacturer category. For more information on these and other category finalists, visit CompanyWeek’s article Spotlight: 2018 Colorado Mfg. Awards Finalists.

Three Colorado companies have been named finalists in the Outstanding Consumer & Lifestyle Brand category of the Colorado Manufacturing Awards (CMA), with help from the NoCo Manufacturing Partnership. They include Sarabella Fishing and Knotty Tie of Denver and Vintage Overland of Grand Junction. The Partnership helped CMA organizers select worthy finalists from a broad field of nominee companies for this award category. Other trade organizations and associations across the wide spectrum of Colorado manufacturing industries helped select finalists in other categories.

“NoCo continues to demonstrate support of manufacturing across a range of industries,” said Heidi Hostetter, 2018 NoCo Partnership chairperson and chair of the group’s NOCOM 2018 trade show. “This year we partnered with the Colorado Manufacturing Awards by hosting the Consumer & Lifestyle category, a reflection of the state’s opportunity to grow manufacturing in this and other important, emerging markets in the consumer space – like the outdoor industry.”

Hostetter added, “For our NOCOM 2018 trade show, we took that commitment and theme and are providing NOCOM attendees a breakfast keynote from Jim Davidson, who comes from this same industry and will speak to resiliency and collaborative efforts across sectors. Jim will also remind us that leadership is a characteristic that we leverage most in our darkest hours not our finest moments.”

Bart Taylor, CompanyWeek publisher and co-presenter of the Colorado Manufacturing Awards along with Manufacturer’s Edge, noted the quality of the NoCo nominees and reiterated Colorado’s opportunity to expand its manufacturing base. “NoCo helped identify three great finalists, from across the state – Denver’s Knotty Tie and Sarabella Fishing, and Grand Junction’s Vintage Overland. It was a magnanimous tip of the cap to communities across the state, even though Ft. Collins/Loveland is home to three Colorado Manufacturing Awards finalists among the ten industry categories.

“Our larger opportunity is to continue to expand the manufacturing conversation, and follow the lead of new companies and leaders that are putting a modern face on today’s sector,” Taylor said. “We’re fortunate to partner with Heidi and the NoCo team.”

NoCo members get a 20% discount to attend the third-annual Colorado Manufacturing Awards in Denver on April 5 from5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Cable Center on the University of Denver campus. Register for the event here, or contact Katie Keating for more information.

MANUFACTURER’S EDGE LAUNCHES A NEW SERIES OF WORKSHOPS AIMED AT BRINGING EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES TO COLORADO MANUFACTURERS

Posted on | March 24, 2018 | No Comments

The Technology AdvantEDGE Series presents “Building a Business Case for Additive” with GE Additive on Thursday, March 29

(Denver, CO) Manufacturer’s Edge is pleased to introduce the 2018 Technology AdvantEDGE Series – a series of workshops introducing new and emerging technologies that manufacturers can implement into their processes and products. The first event in the Technology AdvantEDGE series will be held on Thursday, March 29 at 9am in Denver.

“Building a Business Case for Additive” is presented in cooperation with GE Additive and is aimed at organizations that are interested in exploring in metal additive manufacturing (AM) and need to quantify the economic opportunity.

The workshop will focus on the ROI that metal additive brings and will equip participants with the knowledge to sell the business case for AM to their leadership.

The session will be led by consultants from AddWorks™, GE Additive’s in-house design consulting group, who helped design the fuel nozzle and Advanced Turboprop (ATP). Both parts are FAA certified and were re-engineered using AM and gained significant weight savings, part count reduction, and better performance. The AddWorks™ team will help attendees understand how to develop an AM mindset from the outset.

“Additive manufacturing is fundamentally changing how manufacturing is done, but what often stops organizations from starting their additive journey is a fear of the unknown and understanding what the payback is going to be,” says Heidi Hostetter, Vice President of Faustson Tool.

This one-day workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Key factors in identifing the right part for AM with metals
  • Design, materials and manufacturing considerations during part design
  • Building a ROI-led business case with key cost assumptions
  • Identifying the right parts for AM
  • Optimizing your additive post-processing
  • Design recommendations and considerations
  • Building an additive part cost model
  • How to sell additive up through your organization

This is a hands-on workshop and attendees are encouraged to bring a part with them that might be a suitable for AM production. The Addworks team will then explore the compatibility and potential benefits of implementing an AM redesign.

Davidson will speak about the theme of this year’s event: Creating Culture to Promote Innovation: “In my keynote, I share the epic tale of how I had to find a way to climb an overhanging ice wall alone to escape a deep glacial crevasse. Hear invigorating stories and lessons that help businesses employ innovation and resilience when facing challenges and opportunities. Short on resources, time, and technique? Resolve problematic challenges through adaptation and innovative thinking.

Davidson will be on site after his talk at the show’s registration table signing copies of his New York Times best-selling book, The Ledge. As time permits, he will connect with individuals and organizations on the challenges they face in a competitive manufacturing world, and how they can solve them through resilience and innovation.

Colorado Manufacturing Design Engineers Fill GE Additive’s Design for Additive Manufacturing Course

Posted on | October 17, 2017 | No Comments

State, partners, sponsors bring world leaders in additive manufacturing to Denver to strengthen Colorado’s role as technology leader

Denver, Colorado – H2 Manufacturing Solutions, which provides a broad scope of problem-solving services to manufacturers, in cooperation with GE Additive and Manufacturer’s Edge, today announced GE Additive’s Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) course October 24 and 25, 2017 is full. With support from Colorado OEDIT, sponsors Key Bank and Key Equipment Finance, and partner The 3D Printing Store, a select group of Colorado manufacturing design engineers benefit from two full days of cutting-edge training that benefits them, their teams and employers, and Colorado’s advanced industries.

Noting the high level of interest in the course and how quickly it filled, Tom Bugnitz, CEO of Manufacturer’s Edge, observed, “In the world of 3D metal printing, GE’s LEAP Engine is the gold standard. The 19 additively manufactured fuel nozzles in the engine were engineering and fabrication breakthroughs that improved performance and safety. This is not theory or a futuristic vision. These people have ‘been there and done that.’”

This event, as part of Manufacturing Month, is presented to 50 Colorado manufacturing professionals as part of the outreach commitment Manufacturer’s Edge made to the Utah MEP, the University of Utah, and the U.S. Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment to help advance knowledge of additive manufacturing in the Rocky Mountain West. This event and its cutting-edge information is normally $3,000 per seat. It is free of charge to registered Colorado manufacturing engineers as part of Manufacturer’s Edge’s commitment to the Colorado manufacturing community.

“GE has taken a leadership role in real-world additive manufacturing and demonstrated how this technology can and will be used for creating and manufacturing high-value parts using optimized designs and materials. The 3D Printing Store shares this vision for additive manufacturing and is pleased to be part of this important event with the lead team from GE sharing their expertise with industry leaders in Colorado,” said Debra Wilcox, Co-Founder, The 3D Printing Store

The class is led by Chris Schuppe, engineering leader at GE Additive. GE expects industrial 3D printing to forever change the manufacturing world as we know it. This is one step that Colorado design engineers are taking now to ensure they are prepared for that change. Topics covered in the course include an introduction to additive manufacturing, design for additive manufacturing, additive material characteristics and selection, additive part selection, machine and part qualification, as well as break-out exercises and open discussion.

GE Additive’s Design for Additive Manufacturing Course Comes to Denver

Posted on | September 6, 2017 | No Comments

October 24&25 class brings world-class information to Colorado manufacturing designers and engineers

Denver, Colorado – H2 Manufacturing Solutions, providing manufacturers a broad scope of problem-solving services, in cooperation with GE Additive and Manufacturer’s Edge, brings GE Additive’s Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) course to Denver October 24 and 25, 2017. The State of Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) will provide classroom space at 1625 Broadway Street, 8th floor, Denver, CO 80202.

“Additive manufacturing is fundamentally changing how manufacturing is done, and the biggest gap is designing parts to realize all the benefits additive provides,” said H2 Manufacturing Solutions CEO Heidi Hostetter. “We’re thrilled to bring the world’s leading experts in additive manufacturing design to Colorado to share their knowledge. H2 and Manufacturer’s Edge saw this as another way to help the ongoing effort to make Colorado a leader in additive manufacturing.”

“With additive manufacturing, design innovation is free,” said Chris Schuppe, engineering leader at GE Additive. GE has stated that industrial 3D printing will forever change the manufacturing world as we know it. This is one step that design engineers can take to ensure they are prepared for that change.

Schuppe will lead the class, and bring other GE Additive experts along as instructors. In 2012 he led GE Aviation’s engineering design team, which made significant improvements to the CFM International LEAP engine fuel nozzle. In November 2014 his team developed and tested a CT7 GE helicopter engine designed and made with almost 90% additive parts and systems. His teams have also been responsible for creating additive heat exchangers and developing additive applications for many other programs.

The CFM LEAP fuel nozzle tip combines 20 parts into one for a 400% increase in durability and 25% reduction in weight and was one of the first additively manufactured jet engine components certified by the FAA. This translates into a savings for an airline flying a plane with CFM’s next-generation LEAP engine, thanks to a part that combines many engineering and manufacturing steps into one, and can only be made using additive manufacturing.

Schuppe’s teams created and generated more than 50 patents in 2016. He also led the engineering function for GE’s acquisition of Concept Laser and Arcam – both makers of additive manufacturing machines. In October 2016 he became engineering integration leader for GE Additive, GE’s new business focused on accelerating the additive adoption rate across many industries such as Automotive, Aerospace, Energy, Medical and Dental.

Topics covered in the course include an introduction to additive manufacturing, design for additive manufacturing, additive material characteristics and selection, additive part selection, machine and part qualification, as well as break-out exercises and open discussion.

This event and the cutting-edge information it presents is normally offered at $3,000 per seat. It will be free of charge to the first 55 manufacturing professionals from Colorado who register. Lunch will be provided by Manufacturer’s Edge.

Stampede, Colorado Cowgirl Roundup & Art Show Honor Tami Spaulding, Remember Patsy Moskalski

Posted on | June 16, 2017 | No Comments

Greeley, CO – The Inaugural Colorado Cowgirl Roundup, benefiting the Greeley Stampede Art Scholarship Fund, remembers Patsy Moskalski, the first woman on the Stampede Committee; and honors Tami Spaulding as its 2017 Cowgirl.

This event, in conjunction with the Greeley Stampede’s 18th Annual Stampede Western Invitational Art Exhibit & Sale, takes place Sunday, June 25, 2017 at Island Grove Regional Park. A Cowgirl Roundup Reception goes from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm with mimosas and light snacks. Attendees will watch American Bull Fighting at 1:00 pm. The group will then move to the Bunkhouse at 3:00 pm, where a ceremony with music will be held to remember Patsy and honor Tami. Cash bar and free hors d’oeuvres provided. Parking is included. Find this event on the Mountain States Art Trail Facebook page.

Moskalski passed away 10 years ago, and this event was designed to honor her memory as a true trailblazer and recognize a woman of significant accomplishments. The first woman chosen for that honor is Tami Spaulding.

Tami Spaulding, who has been riding horses since age 2 and is a REALTOR with The Group Inc., has been chosen as the first Cowgirl Roundup Honoree, organizers note, because she’s known for her integrity, professionalism, and treating everyone she encounters with respect and dignity. Much of that comes from her experience growing up living the “cowgirl life.” She honors her family, friends, business relationships and herself by always being honest, respectful and caring. Like all cowgirls, Tami is hardworking and gets the job done with little fuss and fanfare.

Tickets ($50/person or $75/couple) for the Inaugural Colorado Cowgirl Roundup can be purchased online at coloradocowgirlroundup.com or by calling 970-381-5817.
